Prototyping and concept verification

The developing offshore wind industry is heavily dependent on technological development, and in some areas of the industry totally new solutions will emerge over the next few years. These new solutions will need to be validated and tested.

CMR has for a long time played a vital role when it comes to prototyping and concept verifications in areas like oil & gas, maritime and space. Since the start of the offshore wind industry we have accumulated knowledge about technical concepts and are well positioned to evaluate whether a new solution will be successful or not.

Through our general knowledge of construction and mechanical engineering we have been involved in development projects for several novel offshore wind concepts.

Modeling, analysis, visualization and decision support

Our knowledge of modeling and analysis ranges from single-blade design analysis to full offshore wind analysis. For installation simulations we can transform large volumes of input data into sensible suggestions for further action.

Installing and maintaining large offshore wind farms is complex and to a high degree weather-sensitive. The operations are often carried out by specialized ships hired for a given time period. The cost of such operations is largely driven by waiting for weather windows for weather-sensitive operations (transportation, mooring, crane operations, etc.). Decision criteria used to commence a weather-sensitive operation is currently based on significant wave height and average wind velocity. CMR, in cooperation with partners from research and industry, is developing a probabilistic risk-based decision support tool for installation and maintenance operations based on operational criteria rather than weather parameters. The tool is based on extended and integrated probabilistic local weather forecast models and advanced equipment response models.

At CMR we focus on providing decision support, based on our extensive experience in implementing decision-support solutions in areas ranging from search and rescue operations to abundance estimation.

When the wind farm is in production, the various monitoring systems provide an enormous amount of data. Analyzing these data is important both to optimize the production and to minimize downtime due to maintenance. At CMR our visualization and analysis expertise enables us to provide potential customers both the tools and expertise in these areas. Our tools for interactive visual analysis (IVA) enable quick and accurate ways to identify possible problem areas and hidden dependencies in the data. Utilizing the parallel power of modern GPUs we are able to interactively manipulate vast datasets in real time, while keeping the whole dataset in memory.

Energy storage

As more and more renewable energy is brought into the energy mix, the need for intermediate storage increases. CMR is investigating how offshore wind energy can be stored in the form of hydrogen. The produced hydrogen can then serve as a battery by reproducing power through fuel cells. CMR is also looking into the possibility of exporting large amounts of hydrogen to emerging markets all over the world.

 

Offshore wind farms for electrification of Oil & Gas platforms

Based on available offshore wind technology and by using already assigned areas in the North sea it will be possible to power future and existing oil and gas installations with offshore wind. To secure stable power production there will be need for energy storage and/or grid connection. This could be solved in many different ways:

  • Offshore wind in combination with cable to shore
  • Offshore wind in combination with a hydrogen/fuel cell “battery”
  • Offshore wind in combination with a large battery
  • Offshore wind in combination with gas turbines
