Ultrasonic signal transmission in plates – Study of a steel plate immersed in water
In the present work, a theory for the description of the propagation of plane ultrasonic waves through a fluid loaded plate is described. The theory assumes different fluid loading at the two interfaces, but the special case with the same fluid loading is also treated.
The equations for Rayleigh-Lamb modes in a plate in vacuum, leaky Rayleigh-Lamb modes in a fluid immersed plate and transmission through the fluid immersed plate are derived. Some few preliminary simulation results and measurement results are presented for the interaction of an ultrasonic wave with steel plate immersed in water. The simulations are performed for plane wave propagation.
